The bill includes 3bn euro worth of cuts within the period 2016-2019. The cuts are to add further hardships to a pension and health system which has already suffered gravely during the past 6 years of crisis/bailouts/austerity spiral which the Greek economy has entered.

It is already known that, should the bill fail to pass, then the whole third bailout agreement between the government and the creditors will enter a new period of uncairtenty, in fact placing the future of Greece in the Euro to jeopardy. It is not expected that the SYRIZA/ANEL (the government coalition) MPs will reject the bill but it is way beyond their acceptance level so far and a reaction cannot be completely excluded.

All the opposing parties have stated that they will not support the new bill.

The journalist's union has also decided on a two day strike, Friday and Saturday, which explains why our readers will not be seeing our regular news feed. Although ThePressProject, as a web portal, is in a loophole, and in fact many other sites chose to ignore the strike, we feel that it is our ethical duty to follow the decision of our main syndicate. We dont believe that at times like that a strike, a cessation of information is the best way to serve the interests of those who are being harmed the most, but we believe that it is more important to adhere to the rules of democracy and solidarity.

The only exception allowed by the unions is to report on the news of the strike and the talks and vote which will take place within the parliament during the weekend.

The government is hoping to pass this legislature before Monday when the next Eurogroup, dealing with the finalization of the first evaluation of the progress of the latest bailout deal is scheduled to take place in Brussels.

As ThePressProject is a site which only gets funded by its readers, our temporary “silence” costs us gravely, even endagering our very existence. Help us by donating here.
